Brazil FISL

Right now I’m currently in Brazil, at FISL10.

I’ve been holding some talks here, about freedom. People in brazil are very cool, they’re really into free software and have the same values as pirates in Europe. And there’s a big difference between Brazil and Sweden for me.

In Sweden, I can’t even get a meeting with our justice department. In Brazil, I had a chat last night with President Lula. He’s been one of the driving forces in getting rid of proprietary software in the govt and replacing it with a program for mostly using freee software. Brazil has had some bill proposals in place for ruining the Internet but yesterday the president essentially promised to make sure these bill do not pass.

I wish that Europe could be more like this when it comes to fighting for freedom. But I think that in our part of the world, people might have forgot how important it is since the fights we’ve had in the past has been starting to fade out or our memories.

Over here I’m all over the news papers. There’s pictures of me and the president in the news and I got to sign autographs even when I left the conference and went to a night club in Porto Alegre, at 3am. It’s weird! But it makes me sure that the fight we’re doing is important and that people care.

Maybe I will get to visit the justice department in Sweden when it’s been replaced…

Nice :) I really hope you’ll get the cred you deserve :) And cool thing to chat with the president :)

#7 Kålan on 27.06.09 at 23:10

In Sweden, virtually none of the leading politicians wants to meet you, but in Brazil, you get to speak with the president. Cool!

#8 E-mannen on 27.06.09 at 23:15

Oh man! I wonder what Joe Biden thinks of that picture!!

#9 Poliana on 27.06.09 at 23:16

It won’t take long till European people strikes back. At least I hope so, cause freedom is always easier to loose than to take back. I’m glad to hear that people in Latin America care so much about free speech and free sharing over the Internet. My warmest greetings to you !

Hur lyder upphovsrättslagarna i Brasilien?

#11 Marcelo on 28.06.09 at 01:10

Peter,

i was at FISL 10 and i’d like to thank you for your speeches and your presence at the forum. I strongly believe that you have managed to encourage all the people there to continue sharing files, and showed everybody that it’s not wrong. Hope to cya again at FISL 11 next year!

Long live ThePirateBay, free software and freedom in the internet! Thanks again.

The present copyright act of Brazil was introduced in 1998. Translations of the act into English and French are available from WIPO.

#13 jeffer on 28.06.09 at 12:41

Great possibilities!

Brazil, India, the rest of the developing world – and we have real counterforces against the US copyright lobby. Threats of trade sanctions will sound more and more empty and meaningless. Step by step freedom will triumph all over the world. Eventually the US itself will abolish the present tyrannical copyright regime.

Maybe its time to to leave this stupid country (sweden). Hmm.. :-)

Doesn´t sound “democratic” with a president saying he will make sure a bill doesn´t pass although they have an elected parliamet that are supposed to vote representing the people. And where is Your environmental concern? Lula and his government is pushing for the environmental disaster creating the The Belo Monte dam – doesn´t sound very “green” does it?

When you dont have nothing, limelights and fame is the last resort.

#21 Erik on 29.06.09 at 09:44

Martin, you’re a troll.
First you make a point that is totally invalid: obviously as a president who is democratically voted into that position, he has a lot of legitimate influence on whether or not a bill gets passed. Second, you “counter” with a completely unrelated topic without even properly explaining what it is about.
What are you really on about??

#22 Mordae on 29.06.09 at 10:08

I know that Brazil is currently the most democratic country out there, but still… have you actually read their copyright law? It’s typically European. At least there are is no jail (as far as I understood it) for infringers.

The thing is, we really are into OpenSource. My city (Curitiba – PR) was the first one introducing Linux into public computers. And they´r really into it. Working alot, i know some of the fellas working on that project.
And welcome to our country, by the way.

#25 Nushio on 30.06.09 at 03:56

Hey Peter,
I tried to go to your press conference, but sadly, the line was huge, so I had to go to the 6th floor where your conference was transmitted via a projector screen and horrible speakers.

To make things worse, the camera guy abandoned the camera, and never pointed at slides, so whatever you described, we couldn’t see.

If you happen to run across a recording or want to share the slides, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks!

Sorty to see that you guys sold out… this will be the death of The Pirate Bay, a true betrail to us fighting for you guys… .. but ok, money always wins I guess.. . sad to see you guys going down the same path as the rest.. .. It doesnt matter if you guys personally get any money or not…The media Industry still killed the internet.. …and our hope. …not mad..just deeply dissapointed http://www.globalgamingfactory.com/

#28 JudaZ on 30.06.09 at 11:38

do you really….really think a new company will have any chance in hell of fighting the corporations, when even google cant .. they are forced to destroy youtube little bit everyday..now you guys ruin TPB…sure who cares about the users… you can burn your house if you want to ,…but dont call it a good thing.

#29 S on 30.06.09 at 12:34

@JudaZ: Please check your source before being an ass. No one has noticed your so called “fight” for the pirate bay, which in contrast to you is a world wide phenomenon and have done a lot more than anyone can ask of them.

@Brokep

All the best!

#30 JudaZ on 30.06.09 at 12:37

So telling the truth is being an ass? I’m I not entitled to an oppinion? …Peter at least give us the users the right to choose, add a way to remove the user accounts. …you want to make something diffrent ..fubn for you..sucks for me…I dont want any part of it…. I want to remove muy account nowe..and so do alot of others!

#31 Tuxie on 30.06.09 at 12:46

Tack.

#32 Bo on 30.06.09 at 17:07

just take the money. You’re worth it! Take a long vacation leaving phones and other communication equipment at home.

And to the unthankful rest of you – do it yourself instead of complaining. How to should be common knowledge 2009. You just don’t have the balls …

#34 Hannes on 30.06.09 at 17:14

@JudaZ: well, just remove your account. I’ve never heard about you “fighting”. What about getting politically active instead of fearing for your privacy? Learn what means to fight first before you complain about what others do. Thanks.

#39 Janet on 30.06.09 at 21:50

Just take the money and open a new Pirate Bay.

Major didn’t know, but a web site can be opened anytime and become a “Pirate Bay” even if the old “Pirate Bay” as been sold ;-)

#40 JudaZ on 30.06.09 at 23:45

Not sure its very clever to go to bed with a con man like Hans Pandeya, he has spent a lot of time in courts, he has betrayed his partners, he didnt even pay his lawer last time. …o well .. sure, take a rest.. enjoy Brazil .. .. but its not so strange people feel cheated fo ever donating money to you..but what to do.., life sux … time to continue the fight..but have learned that no one can be trusted..

#41 Eric on 01.07.09 at 04:43

After being at FISL and hearing your speeches (including the one in the bar), I gotta say I’m very disappointed by the selling of The Pirate Bay announced today, to say the least. I am not going to judge beforehand, but I feel like it is a huge loss for us pirates of the internet. I just wanted to express this feeling, that I am sure is shared by millions of people around the world. =(

#42 Arla on 01.07.09 at 07:06

Coolt!

#43 Niklas on 01.07.09 at 08:13

JudaZ, the people behind TPB did more to enlighten the people on the issue of freedom on the internet than anyone ever expected a torrent site to in the first place, I don’t see why you’re whining over people who sacrificed nearly a decade of their lives and in the end, ended up getting ~3 million $ fines and one year in jail for it (although that’s not entirely settled yet).

It’s easy to act all big in comments on a fucking blog going “I’LL CONTINUE THE FIGHT CUZ U BASTARDS R TRAITORS !!111″, but in the end, none of us will do as much as they did for the world.

Sellouts or not, they’re heroes and deserve to live regular lives now, being able to have families etc without the tax agency on their ass 24/7.

Also, you seem to completely ignore their statements of them starting funds to keep on supporting the cause with sideprojects.

Personally, I believe them having run thepiratebay gained them enough publicity to make sure they’re renowned and will be heard worldwide in whatever more serious projects they plan to start, because I just don’t think that running a torrent site is the best way to be taken seriously.

Keep in mind, they’re after opening up people’s minds to the issues of free(dom on the) internet – not to make sure everyone can get their tv-rips on time…

#44 loves tpb och peter! on 01.07.09 at 11:10

#46 Martin on 01.07.09 at 12:52

@Hi Erik
What it is about?
Just a simple question for Peter who is a member of Miljöpartiet why he didn´t speak to Lula about the fact that Lula is all OK in regards of one of the largets environmental disaster projects ever created. http://www.amazonwatch.org/amazon/BR/bmd/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belo_Monte_Dam
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/wideangle/shows/dammed/handbook4.html

Why don´t you have read and see who Peter is in bed with, a government who has some of the worst environmetal records in the world – but I guess Peter and Erik doesn´t feel it is important?

$7million for the TPB, nice job……..excellent business…. great money to be made from a business giving away other peoples property without their permission, then selling it on to another sucker…….. well done…..will you make more $$$$ by selling the TPB user info to the RIAA?

#53 Thiago Branco Meurer on 02.07.09 at 15:48

We Brazilians Thanks for everything!
And here we will continue to raise the flag of the Free Software EVER!

#54 LucasJ on 02.07.09 at 20:48

Talks about Freedom? For crying out loud, don’t be such a phoney. Selling TPB to a private company that rolls on the stock market it’s almost an act of betrayal. You are a shame for all of us who struggle every day against oppression of the multi-media monopolys and the censorship of capitalism corporations. Shame, shame on you.

And for all of the assholes that will defend you after this comment, you don’t have the slightless idea of what it takes to be in the possition that this guys had and have principles. Off course, at the end of the day, that’s what counts… not the euros on your bank account.

http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=94577094004&h=652LW&u=CVf4g&ref=mf

#59 mad0 on 04.07.09 at 17:24

did peter explain that the piratebay is being sold to a company who has plans to charge users for all the content on the new torrent site? the users created the piratebay and a few individuals are now profiting under the disguise of internet freedom. boycott the bay, delete your account and run like hell. once the new owners take over, all your accounts are belong to them.
